Moore’s first film in seven years is a return to his best for this interminably provocative and entertaining activist and documentarian. Armed with a giant American flag and imagining himself as a one man invasion force, marauding Moore explores Europe, plundering the best socially progressive ideas. There’s the free education system in Finland, the generous paid vacations of Italy, and Norway’s truly rehabilitative penal system to mention but a few. The tongue-in-cheek intention is of course to return with these stolen discoveries to the USA, appropriating them as American ideals. Part travelogue, part idealist treatise, maverick Moore’s typically subversive-comedic style is balanced against a thoroughly thought-provoking, often heartfelt inquiry into making America great again.
